In 1997, James ‘Q’ Martin, with a film camera in one hand and a climbing rope in the other, left Flagstaff, Arizona and traveled to Central American to study the language and immerse himself in the culture. It was there where he decided he wanted to actively pursue his passion for photography and telling stories.
Returning to Flagstaff, ‘Q’ set down roots and began Q Media, a fully-staffed production house. Since its inception, he has become a critically-acclaimed and award-winning filmmaker and adventure photographer with strong ties and connections to the Southwest: his home and one of biggest inspiration.
Inquisitive, dedicated and passionate about regional and international conservation efforts, Q has traveled extensively throughout the Southwest and to over 30 countries, spanning six continents, documenting the stories of world-class athletes, artists, conservationists, filmmakers and scientists who have inspired him. He hopes by capturing their concerns and compassion for their intimate and special places on film that this will raise awareness to the issues facing our communities throughout the world, uniting people to take steps to preserve and protect these places for future generations.
He is honored to be an ambassador and collaborate with Nikon USA, KEEN Footwear, Voketab, Klean Kanteen, Goal Zero, BlueWater Ropes, Mountainsmith Camera Bag, Kahtoola and Clif Bar on a variety of social and media campaigns and projects.
"Q is the rare photographer that takes time to get to know his clients. Making this effort results in strong, targeted work. Q is also unique in that he pushes himself as an artist - his work is constantly evolving, while still maintaining the strength of his clean graphic style. Q is on the cutting edge, delivering consistent work according to our guidelines. He is also great at finding new talent to photograph - providing us with a constant stream of strong, new imagery. Most importantly, Q is fun to work with!! We appreciate his warm spirit, talent and generosity." - Jane Sievert Photo Editor, Patagonia
